Delineating presbyphagia from dysphagia is an important challenge that many clinicians face. We will review the exisiting literature that explores and quantifies age-related changes to swallowing with special attention paid to functional changes to airway protection and residue in the context of healthy aging. We will share recent data from the NYU Swallowing Lab about the relationship between measures of frailty/physical function and swallowing outcomes.
Sonja Molfenter, CCC-SLP, PhD, is a clinically-trained Speech Language Pathologist whose research specializes in understanding the physiological features of both typical and disordered swallowing. Dr. Molfenter’s over-arching research goal is to produce clinically-relevant research to inform front-line clinical practice. Her primary line of NIH-funded research focuses on the impact of age-related changes on swallowing function and explore methods to prevent or reverse these changes.
