This presentation will focus on common challenges Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) face when developing early intervention protocols for tracheostomy patients in the acute care setting, including the early use of in-line speaking valves for tracheostomy patients on mechanical ventilation, and the influence of early SLP intervention on dysphagia management. Through case studies, we will review the importance of early SLP involvement, building multidisciplinary teams, and discuss creative solutions to common barriers in two trauma centers within the NYC Health + Hospitals network in the Bronx.
